Notes on charts
A year from now nobody remembers why the boiler ran hotter in March. A note on the chart does: what happened, and when - the burner serviced, a new heat pump, the meter replaced, a week the house stood empty - drawn beside the readings on the charts of the tag it is about.
Notes are on every plan, and use none of your tags or storage.

Add a note
- Open Trends with the tag the note is about.
- Click the chart at the time it happened and choose Add a note at… - or press Add note under the chart, which starts at the end of the chart's range.
- Choose the kind, give it a title - what the chart shows - and, if you like, a few lines more. Tick It lasted a while for a holiday, a shutdown or a test, and say until when.
- Choose what it is about: the one tag, shown on its charts, or the whole account, shown on every chart.
A drag across the chart still zooms; only a click offers a note. The times are your browser's, as the chart's are, and what is kept is the moment itself, so a colleague in another time zone sees the note at the same place on the chart.
The kinds
- Note: anything worth remembering when you look at the chart again.
- Measure taken: something done to save energy or improve a process - a new heat pump, insulation, a changed setting.
- Meter replaced: about the meter's own tag, whose increase is then worked out across it, so the jump from the old meter's reading to the new one's is not counted as use. It always goes on that tag: on the whole account it would change no increase. The tag's Meter section under Tags records one too.
- New normal: from here on, this is how the tag is meant to behave.
On the chart
A note is a dashed line at its time with its title at the top of the chart; one that lasted is a light band across the time it lasted. Your notes are violet. Where several are close together, a title gives way rather than cover another, and the line stays. Under the chart, Notes on this chart lists every one in the range, oldest first, with its kind, its time, what it is about and who wrote it, and each can be changed or deleted there. Hiding a tag in the chart hides its notes with it. Notes are drawn on the level chart; a meter's increase bars do not show them.
Tag Historian notes some things itself, in grey: an import of hourly history, and a switch to another SMHI weather station when the one in use stops sending. They say Recorded by Tag Historian and cannot be changed or deleted. A link from an alert marks the alert's moment in amber.
Through the API
An integration that knows when something happened can say so itself, with a key that may write:
POST /api/eventswith akind(note,measure,meter_replacedornew_normal), atitle,at, and optionallyendAt,tagNameandbody- ameter_replacedneeds itstagName;GET /api/events?from=…&to=…lists those that touch the range, oldest first, up to a thousand at a time (fewer when they are long), with anextcursor for the rest;tags=a,bgives those tags' notes and the account-wide ones;PATCHandDELETE /api/events/{id}change and delete one.
Both account exports under Settings carry the notes. A chart loads the notes on its own tags and the whole account's, oldest first, as many as one request carries, and says so when the range holds more; a shorter range shows the rest.
Common questions
- Who sees my notes?
- Everyone on the account, on the charts of the tag a note is about, or on every chart for a note about the whole account. A read-only link to a chart view does not show them.
- Who can add them?
- Editors and Admins, and an API key that may write. A Viewer sees the notes and cannot change them.
- Do notes count toward my tags or storage?
- No. An account keeps up to 2 000 notes, on every plan.
- What happens to a note when I rename a tag?
- It follows the tag: through a rename, and into the tag another is merged into. It is deleted when its tag is deleted together with the tag’s measurements, and with the account.
